Game on: Salford studio White Paper Games announce release date for first-person puzzler Ether One

A Salford-based videogame developer has lifted the lid on their debut title releasing a teaser trailer for Ether One.

White Paper Games published a 30-second trailer for their first-person exploration puzzler, which will launch on March 25 for the PC game stores Steam and Good Old Games (GOG).

Ether One will let players ‘deal with the fragility of the human mind’ and will support virtual reality headset Oculus Rift when it finally reaches consumers.

Players will be tasked with repairing fractured minds from the inside using broken memories.

The six-man team at White Paper have been working on the game for three years and had originally aimed for a release in the second quarter of 2013.

MEET THE TEAM: White Paper Games crew are ‘proud’ of the game

Studio co-founder Peter Bottomley told MM how it feels to finally set a release date.

“It feels kind of surreal at the moment,” he said.

“You’ve spent every day of your week for three years, thinking and scrutinising about each small detail you want your game to be.

“And then all of a sudden there’s an end date where you know you won’t be able to add anything more. I know that it will be something we’re really proud of, but it’s definitely a weird feeling to know it will be out of our hands soon.”

Ether One was approved for the Steam Greenlight scheme, which allows members of the Steam community to vote for games they want to see in the store, back in June 2013.

White Paper Games was founded in the summer of 2011 by Benjamin Hill and Bottomley after completing an MA course in Games Design at the University of Central Lancashire.

In September 2012 they were awarded a £25,000 grant from Abertay University’s Prototype Fund scheme which enabled them to move into their own studio in the heart of Manchester.

Ether One will face tough competition on release day with downloadable content for Bioshock Infinite and Diablo III and the PC release of Deus Ex: The Fall also available on March 25 while Sony’s Playstation 4 exclusive Infamous: Second Son hits just four days before.
