Oldham chip pan fire: Woman ‘lucky’ to be alive as home had no smoke alarms

A 66-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after a chip pan caught fire in her Oldham home that didn’t contain any smoke alarms.

The incident occurred at around 7pm last night, when a firefighters crews were called after reports of a fire in a semi-detached house on Saffron Drive.

The woman was treated for burns and taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital and a 38-year-old man was given oxygen for smoke inhalation by a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Trauma Technician.

Firefighters have issued a plea to take care with chip pans following the blaze.

Chair of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton, said: “These people were incredibly lucky because they did not have any smoke alarms in their property.

“Chip pans are very dangerous and should never be left unattended. A thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer or ovens are much safer ways of cooking chips.

“If you have a chip pan at home think very seriously about chucking it in the bin and using a safer method to cook your favourite snack in the future.”

Firefighters in breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze and a fan to clear smoke from the property.
