Saving children’s lives: First aid app endorsed by British Red Cross can teach Manchester parents vital skills

By Sam Richardson

Lives could be saved by a new mobile app endorsed by the British Red Cross which is designed to equip Manchester parents with vital first aid skills.

The Baby and Child First Aid app was launched on Friday after figures revealed that most parents aren’t able to deliver potentially life-saving first aid to babies and children.

A survey conducted by the charity found that only 13% of UK parents have attended a first aid course aimed at showing them how to deliver first aid to their children.

Judith Jones, a Red Cross first aid trainer based in Manchester, said: “Every time I deliver a first aid session, a parent or carer asks me how to give first aid to their child, a big worry is choking.

“The app is something that can be used at any time to prepare in case of an emergency like this, and it is really easy to use – and free!”

One of the app’s most unique features is its Hospital Finder, which allows the user to search for the nearest emergency department anywhere in the UK.

It also comes with useful videos, animations, tips and a ‘test yourself’ section.

The Baby and Child First Aid app has been optimised for Apple iPhone, iPad and Android mobile, but will also work on Apple iPod Touch and Android tablets.

Joe Mulligan, head of first aid education at Red Cross, said: “There’s a real appetite for this kind of product.

“I think most people appreciate the value of having such potentially life-saving knowledge at their fingertips.”

The app also enables users to record children’s medication needs, family medical information and any other important details.

For those who cannot download the app, British Red Cross hold courses across Greater Manchester, in Salford, Oldham, Altrincham, Bolton and Trafford, and can travel for larger groups.
