24-hour ‘marathon match’ aims to raise £10k to support Manchester Arena victims’ families

Mancunians can offer their support to the families of the Manchester Arena attack by taking part in a 24-hour football event next Friday.

From 7pm on June 2 Curzon Ashton’s Tameside Stadium will play host to more than 100 games of 7-a-side football in an attempt to raise £10,000.

Each match will be an hour long, and teams will even have the opportunity to play during the middle of the night.

Any prospective teams from under 6s to open age are welcome to take part at a cost of £10 a player, with all proceeds going towards the Manchester Evening News’s appeal fund, which so far stands at over £1.6million.

A number of famous faces are also expected to take to the pitch, including Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, and Manchester-born boxer Anthony Crolla.

One of the event’s organisers, Mark Howard, told MM: “We wanted to do something to help the families who were affected by the attack, and one of the best things to come out of Manchester is the football.

“There are lots of people who want to do something and football is a great way for everyone to get together and raise some money.

“We just wanted to help in some way, and I think that’s the feeling right throughout Manchester at the moment.”
