Second time lucky? Manchester City set sights on Borussia Dortmund hit-man Robert Lewandowski again

By Colin Rhodes

Manchester City are looking to secure Borussia Dortmund hit-man Robert Lewandowski, in a deal that could see Edin Dzeko move to the Bundesliga in exchange.

The deal would see City land their ideal replacement for Juventus-bound Carlos Tevez. As well as Dzeko it is likely the Blues would have to stump up cash to secure the signing of the much-coveted Polish star.

The 2012 Premier League champions’ bid to sign 24-year-old Lewandowski at the end of last season failed despite a £24million bid. At the time it was said Lewandowski favoured a move to Bayern Munich instead.

However, the Bundesliga runners-up will not want to sell another one of their stars to their main rival following the departure of Mario Goetze the same way.

That has reawakened City’s interest in the striker and also alerted rivals Manchester United, who are thought to be preparing a bid of their own.

The loss of Tevez from the City wage bill means they could use the money freed up from his £200,000 a week salary to tempt Lewandowski to the Etihad.

New boss Manuel Pellegrini will need to make strengthening his striking options a priority following the departure of Mario Balotelli to AC Milan in January and Carlos Tevez yesterday.

The Dortmund star was one of the most prolific strikers in Europe last season, finishing second in both the Bundesliga and Champions League standings.

Lewandowski netted 24 times in the German top tier, whilst in Europe’s most prestigious club competition, the Poland international managed 10 goals – including four in the semi-final first-leg against Real Madrid.
