Rome wasn’t built in a day: Man Utd fans and players need time to learn my philosophy, says Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal is asking for patience in the wake of Manchester United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat at MK Dons in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Van Gaal’s wait for a first competitive victory with United continued as the three-times European champions were bundled out of the competition by the League One outfit, described as “ridiculous” by opposite number Karl Robinson.

However with a host of stars to return to the lineup, and new record signing Angel Di Maria to join the fray, Van Gaal is confident United can start to climb the Premier League table with upcoming games against Burnley, QPR and Leicester, all three of whom are tipped to struggle in this year’s top flight.

“It is difficult for the fans to believe in philosophy of Louis van Gaal, but you have to do that because I am here to build up a new team and a new team is not built in one month,” the Dutchman said.

“We are building a team which we cannot make in one month or even one year. It is very disappointing, but I hope they maintain their confidence in our club.

“We know exactly what we are doing. We have lost in the Capital One Cup, so tonight has cost us the chance of a trophy, and that is disappointing.”

United now have just two titles to play for this season including the FA Cup and Van Gaal identified the fans as a core element to the club’s success this season.

“As they were at Sunderland, the fans were unbelievable,” Van Gaal said of United’s second Premier League fixture of the season, a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

“For me it’s unbelievable and it’s fine to hear that, but I don’t want to lose for the Manchester United fans.

“I want to give them victories and I’m used to giving victories to the fans and I hope we can turn around these defeats.”

Van Gaal batted away any criticism about his team selection by pointing out the club’s mounting injury list and the fact they had just two days between fixtures.

“We have played the match when we had nine injuries and we have played within 48 hours.

“So I don’t think I can play with the squad I used on Sunday. I have to look at the second team and youth education and then we played this match.”
