Weird World: Dude, where’s my pork sandwich? Butcher sells meat from pigs reared on marijuana

By John McDougall

A butcher is taking his meat to new highs – selling pork from pigs reared on marijuana.

Giving a whole new meaning to ‘pot-bellied pig’, William von Schneidau runs BB Ranch Meats in Seattle and earlier this year took the remnants of marijuana plants from a nearby medical grower and fed them to pigs on a Snohomish ranch.

The resulting ‘joints’ have a new flavour that has seen them flying off the shelves, but Mr Von Schneidau insists it is all in the name of reducing the ranch’s carbon footprint.

“It just got so popular then we ran out, ran out of meat,” he told CNN.

“Here in the butcher shop, we can make anything that you could imagine, somebody requests something and we make it then make extra of it and see if people like it.

“All we’re trying to do is to help the local ranchers and to figure out some ways to shorten the carbon footprint.

“I have ate it and I don’t feel any difference. I don’t smoke, but I guess it’s foggy. We haven’t fed them any sour pickles yet, but we’ll see what happens.”

Mr Von Schneidau has always experimented with creating different meats, even feeding vodka to pigs in the past.

The store sold four pot-infused pigs earlier in the year and created a variety of products including bacon and proscuitto.

Though marijuana is a class-B drug in the UK, as of last year it is legal to use it recreationally in Washington state.

MM wonder whether these marijuana products leave you with the munchies or not.

Either way, the butcher needs to get on twitter and get himself a ‘hashtag’ trending…
