Losing captain Nemanja Vidic is a worrying blow for Manchester United, admitted Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday.
With England youngsters Chris Smalling and Phil Jones already sitting on the injury table, Fergie was desperate to keep his first-choice centrebacks fit.
But Vidic’s eight-month blow to the squad leaves the Scot with only two fit central defenders for tomorrow’s clash with Tottenham.
"Everyone knows the situation with our defenders," said Ferguson.
"We are having a hard time with that.
"Nemanja Vidic being out is a blow to us and we simply cannot take a risk with defenders.
"We just hope if we can get through the next two league games it will give us a little breather and we can start to get one or two of them back."
And with Jones’ recovery time expected to last the same amount of time as the Serbian’s, Ferguson is pinning his hopes on welcoming Smalling back from a broken metatarsal.
