Champion Burnley butcher has his sights on another sausage crown

A Burnley Butcher is hoping to regain his crown, as British Sausage Week rolls into Salford next week.

Stephen Berkin, twice winner of the Champion of Champions Award for the UK’s best sausage, is one of 11 North West butchers selected for the regional finals on November 4th.

Mr Berkin, of Berkin’s Butchers, is hoping to tempt the celebrity judge Craig Revel Horwood with his pork, marmalade and Whisky variety.

Talking about how he came up with the recipe, he said a previous award winning Pork and marmalade sausage lost marks for being too sweet, which gave him an idea for a new flavour.

“I used to like whisky with marmalade and through a bit of trial and error I came up with current recipe,” he said.

Manchester butchers who hope to challenge for the top prize are P.J. Haworth & Sons with their Taffy Tornado and FS Weildon with the Pork Diploma Winners Sausage.

Anny Terrell of British Sausage Week said: “All sausages will be subjected to strict judging by Craig and the British Sausage Appreciation Society, to ensure only the best of the best are crowned as a Star Sausage and awarded with the ultimate recognition in the form of a 2010 Banger Award.”

The North West’s best banger will then have the opportunity to go head to head with other regional winners in a bid to become the country’s best.

The event will take place at the Mark Addy riverside restaurant, which is named after a Victorian hero who saved more than 50 people from the River Irwell.
