Police appeal for witnesses after attempted rape in Oldham town centre

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 34-year old woman was the victim of an attempted rape in Oldham town centre in the early hours of this morning.

The victim was making her way home from a bar off Yorkshire Street, when a man who she had spoken to earlier in the evening approached her and sexually assaulted the woman behind a nearby chiropractor practice.

The incident occurred shortly before 4.40am on Friday 28 October 2016.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation and made an appeal for any witnesses to come forward to speak about the incident.

Detective Inspector Ian Harratt from Greater Manchester Police’s Oldham Borough said the woman was subjected to a ‘violent attack’.

He said: “The victim is receiving our full support at this horrific time and I am determined to find the person responsible.”

The attacker is described as around 30-years old with olive skin, of medium build with brown eyes, dark brown short back and sides hair and stubble.

Police believe he was wearing black jeans with a fur pattern on the front. He spoke with a local accent and identified himself as “Lee”.

Det Insp Harratt added: “I am appealing for anyone who many have an information about this horrendous attack or who may recognise the description of seen in the man in the bars in Oldham town centre, to get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Anyone who has any information of this man’s whereabouts is asked to phone 0161 856 8972 to contact police on 101 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
