Greater Manchester MP to feature on University Challenge

A Manchester MP is to take on Jeremy Paxman, but in a slightly different way.

Graham Stringer, MP for Blackley and Broughton, will be featuring on University Challenge.

He will be appearing over the Christmas period as part of the BBC2 special Christmas shows.

“I had to think about appearing on the show at first but after a bit I decided to go for it,” he said.

“I haven’t got the most experience but I aim to give it a shot.”

He will be featuring alongside Ray Simpson of Channel 4 Time Team along with George Ergatoudis, Head of music for Radio 1 and physicist Stewart Palmer.

Mr Stringer said: “I hope that the other contestants will be able to get to answer the questions, as I don’t think I will be able to answer many of them.

“I am a bit worried about the questions that are asked but I feel the rest of the team will be more helpful than me.”

The Labour MP is a graduate of the University of Sheffield with an honours degree in Chemistry.

When asked about facing Paxman, he responded he was more concerned with the questions than facing the hard hitting host.

Mr Stringer did admit that he has watched the show on a number of occasions when flicking through the channels.
