Ace Aguero confident ‘reinforcements’ will ensure Manchester City escape Champions League group stage

By Tim Hyde

Manchester City superstar Sergio Aguero believes the Blues’ summer spending and squad reinforcements will ensure they escape the group stages of the Champions League.

Both times City have qualified for the competition they have failed to get past the first hurdle of the group stages.

Last year’s abysmal showing in Champions League saw the Eastland’s side fail to win a game – finishing bottom of their group.

The 25-year-old Aguero told Talksport: “The first goal is to progress, yes. Get to the knockout stage.

“Afterwards?  We’ll have to look at who we cross paths with, and then try and do everything possible to get as far as we can.

“The most important thing is to perform well in the group stage to get to the last 16.”

Manchester City’s prize forward believes that new boss Manuel Pellegrini has improved the Citizens squad by bringing in quality signings.

“I think we reinforced well,” Aguero said. “They will certainly give a lot to the club.

“I think there is a really good level here in order to compete for the Premier League, the Champions League and the other cups.

“I hope we continue in the way we started, and we’ll see at the end of the year how everything goes.”

The Argentine had an injury-plagued season last time round and hopes he can stay fully fit through the duration of this season and help the Blues regain the Premier League title and challenge in Europe.

Fan favourite Aguero will go down in folk-lore after producing the strike that won Manchester City their first league title in 44 years – two years ago.
