Bolton-born comedian Peter Kay has announced he will bring his hit TV series Phoenix Nights to the stage next year, in aid of Comic Relief.
The 41-year-old star will host two nights on January 31 and February 1 at the Manchester Phones 4u Arena and will reunite the original cast from the Channel 4 show for the first time in fifteen years.
The sitcom appeared on screens in 2001 and followed the rise and fall of Brian Potter’s beloved Pheonix Club and starred Kay, Dave Spikey and Paddy Mcguinness.
Peter Kay said: “Comic Relief has always been close to my heart and I always try to think of something.
“I could think of no better way to raise money and have fun than getting everybody back together.”
Kay is no stranger to the Manchester arena. His Guinness Record breaking stand-up tour saw the comedian play an astonishing 40 sell-out nights at the venue.
The father-of-one announced the news on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show, after teasing fans on Twitter yesterday but said he had no plans to create a third series.
He said: “It’s lovely to do it and I hope people support it, because I think it’ll be a belter. I don’t know if any more will come off the back of it – we’ll just have to see.
“I don’t know about a series – I don’t think so, I’ve no plans to. There are lots of things written but I think it’s a case of doing one thing at a time, little steps.
“I rang all the cast and they overwhelmed me with their generosity, everybody’s doing it for free, everybody’s involved.”
