Swinton dance teacher who groomed two pupils jailed as lenient sentence quashed

A Swinton dance teacher who avoided jail in November – after pleading guilty to grooming and having sexual relationships with two 15-year-old pupils – has now been sentenced to four years in prison.

Jon Broni, 23, was handed a three-year community order and required to attend a sex offender’s programme in 2014 after a judge at Manchester Crown Court said the schoolgirls had given their ‘fulsome consent’.

The dance coach was exposed after one of the ‘infatuated’ girls’ mother found incriminating images on her daughter’s phone.

“Jon Broni as an adult and as a teacher was in a position of trust,” said Ian Rushton, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West.

“He exploited his influence over two 15-year-old girls and took advantage of their infatuation with him in order to groom them into sexual activity with him.

“He abused their trust and that of their parents. I am pleased that Jon Broni has now been given a sentence which reflects the serious nature of any sexual offences against children.”

Broni, a resident of Wendover Road, Wythenshawe, also swapped naked pictures with the two pupils, and persisted with his exploitation even after friends and colleagues warned him to stop.

Although Lord Justice Davis admitted that there was only a slight ‘element of grooming’ in Broni’s case, the 23-year-old was handed two jail terms of two years each – running consecutively.
