‘People forget’: Patrice Evra baffled by Arsenal boo boys after Robin van Persie jeered on Gunners return

By Chris Bailey

Patrice Evra has jumped to the defence of teammate Robin van Persie after the Manchester United striker was dealt a frosty reception at ex-club Arsenal.

The Dutchman was booed throughout his return to the Emirates Stadium, but silenced the crowd with a penalty late in the first-half to earn a point for the Red Devils.

And Evra insists the Gunners’ support should show more respect for a former hero who had to leave to achieve Premier League success.

“He did a good job for Arsenal and I was really disappointed for him,” said Evra. ”I think he felt it as well.

“To take that penalty he showed what a world-class, top player he is. He kept his nerves down to score that penalty and I am happy for him.

“People forget what he achieved for Arsenal. But he showed them that he hasn’t made the wrong choice.

“It was a long time that he didn’t win the league and he has come to Manchester United and won the league.”

Following a sluggish start which saw Theo Walcott race away for the opening goal, United rallied back and had several chances to take all three points back to Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were already crowned champions – with victory over Aston Villa last week – but Evra admits his side maintain the desire to win whatever the circumstances.

“A lot of people expected to see Manchester United not playing well because we have already won the title,” he added. “That is not the mentality of this club.

“It is important for us to win every game. It was a big game for us and people might laugh when I say that, but that is the Manchester United culture. It will never change.”
