Wigan's Di Santo dreads break after getting season underway in style

Wigan Athletic striker Franco Di Santo must dread a good performance in the Premier League as it is normally followed by an enforced break.

The former Chelsea man scored his first goals of the season and was named man-of-the-match for the DW club in Saturday’s 2-0 win over newcomers QPR.

Roberto Martinez’s men – who picked up their first win of the season – do not now play until they face Manchester City in two weeks time because of international fixtures.

But Di Santo claims he is used to the breaks after a similar scenario when on-loan at Wigan’s Lancashire Premier League rivals Blackburn Rovers.

“It's always the way that when you do enjoy a game like that, there's a break that follows,” said the Argentine, who signed for Wigan on deadline-day last summer.

“When I scored my first goal for Blackburn Rovers, I had to sit the next game out against Chelsea because I was not allowed to play against my parent club.

“This time we have an international break so no game for two weeks but that's football, we'll all get good rest during this time and be as hungry as ever when we take on Manchester City away.”

Di Santo scored with the aid of two deflections but his hard work and endeavour meant he was always causing the QPR defence problems, especially with his 6ft 4in frame.

His Saturday performance means he has already doubled last season’s total and the 22-year-old is targeting more goals for the Latics.

“It was an amazing afternoon for me and for the team to get our first win of the season,” he said.

“The most important thing for me now is to continue helping the team to earn more victories.

“I said last week that it was important I started scoring more goals for the team, so to get two against QPR was a great feeling and hopefully they're the first of many more to follow."
