‘We’ve told you from day one’: Moyes assures fans Rooney won’t be heading to Chelsea as transfer window looms

By David Aspinall

David Moyes remains defiant in Manchester United’s stance on the possibility of Wayne Rooney departing Old Trafford this summer – and made his disdain for the speculation clear.

Rooney has already been the target of two bids from title rivals Chelsea this summer, both of which have been rejected.

He put in a man-of-the match performance against Jose Mourinho’s men on Monday night after creating two goals in his 30-minute cameo against Swansea on the opening day of the season.

But yet again, Moyes was pressed on whether the England international would be leaving the champions.

“We told you and everybody else from day one, so I don’t think there’s anything else to add today,” he said.

The Scotsman’s comments came in a press conference this afternoon ahead of his team’s match against Liverpool on Sunday.

Moyes failed to win any of the Merseyside derbies played at Anfield during his 11-year reign as Everton manager and admitted it would be a ‘big win’ if Manchester United were to be victorious on Sunday.

“[In some ways it’s] no different to any other game as you can only get three points for a win but it’d be a big win if we can do that,” he said.

“Everyone tells me it’s a big rivalry, Liverpool and United, and it was like that with Everton as well.

“I’m looking forward to the game and part of coming to Manchester United is to be involved in these types of games.”

He called for cooler heads to prevail in this intense rivalry.

“If anybody from Liverpool or Manchester United stepped out of line they shouldn’t,” he said.

“It is important people watch this game for the football and nothing else.”

As the transfer window draws to a close he admitted it could be difficult to bring new faces in before the deadline finishes on Monday September 2.

“It might be busy in the next few days and I hope we do a little bit of business but I couldn’t guarantee that,” he said.

This won’t fill United fans with much hope, especially when it has been reported today that bids have been rejected for four players.

The Reds have reportedly failed in their attempts to sign midfielders Daniele de Rossi, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini along with defender Leighton Baines.
