Manchester United’s summer transfer trauma deepens as £25million bid for Ander Herrera rejected

By Kenny Lomas

Manchester United’s summer of transfer mis-firings have been dealt a fresh blow as Athletic Bilbao have rejected a bid for Spanish youngster Ander Herrera.

Club president Josu Urrutia claims a bid, reportedly in the region of £25million, was lodged for the 24-year-old yesterday evening – but was immediately dismissed.

It’s understood that Herrera has a £30.75million release clause in his contract, which United will have to meet if they want to capture his signature.

Urrutia said: “We have had an offer for Ander Herrera. Our club is different, it is based on sentiment. Our objective isn’t to make money.

“We received the offer last night and have communicated that we will not negotiate for our players.

“For a player to go, first the player must express his desire to leave the club and pay the release clause.”

The latest blow comes after a frustrating summer in the transfer market for new United manager, David Moyes.

The Red Devils boss has so far missed out on a number of new additions including Thiago Alcântara, Cesc Fabregas and has just seen a second joint bid rejected by Moyes’ former team Everton, for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

With the impending September 2 transfer deadline fast approaching, the United manager’s options appear to be dwindling.
