‘Bring it on’: World champion BMX cyclist Liam Phillips ‘thrilled’ at Manchester competition prospect

By Tom Pilcher

BMX champion Liam Phillips is itching to show off his rainbow jersey in Manchester when the World Cup returns to the city next April.

Phillips won the inaugural event at the National Cycling Centre earlier this year and then sped to world championship glory in New Zealand in July.

Another British rider, Shanaze Reade, won the women’s race at what was last week voted Manchester’s major sports event of the year for 2013 and Phillips said next year would be gruelling but spectacular.

“I am thrilled by the idea of competing in the world champion’s jersey in front of a British crowd,” he said in a statement.

“The competition itself will be tough, but I’ll put everything into repeating my success from last year and I’m looking forward to once again being able to race at my home BMX track in Manchester.”

Tickets for the April 18/19 World Cup, part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series which aims to bring 70 world class sporting events to the UK by 2019, will go on general sale at 11am on October 31.
