Busy Oldham boss Lee Johnson wants side to repeat winning feat against former Premier League rivals Swindon

By Matthew Naylor

Oldham manager Lee Johnson has called on his team to build off their victory over Swindon Town earlier in the season for when they visit the County Ground on Saturday.

The 16th-placed Latics have worked hard in recent weeks to pull four points clear of the relegation zone.

Johnson, who has been one of the busiest managers in the January transfer window, is relishing this weekend’s trip to Wiltshire.

“Swindon Town will be a tough game, they are a good side and they play good football which will suit us,” said Johnson.

“We have beaten them once this season so we will go there looking to give another good account of ourselves and hopefully bring back a positive result.”

The last meeting between the two sides, at Boundary Park in October, the Latics came away 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Carl Winchester and Danny Philliskirk.

The door has not stopped revolving at Boundary Park this month after first-team such as James Tarkowski and top scorer Adam Rooney have left the club.

Tarkowski, a deadline day mover, has an agreement in place that he will rejoin the Latics until the end of the season when the loan window opens in early February.

John-Paul Kissock, meanwhile, signed on a loan move of his own on Thursday and is in the squad for Saturday’s away game at Swindon.

“JP is certainly hungry, and with the pedigree he has got he needs to play with players that can fit with a similar style,” Johnson said of Kissock, whom he signed on loan from Macclesfield Town.

There is plenty of history between Oldham and Swindon as, in years gone by, this was a Premier League fixture when Town played their one and only season in the top flight of English football in 1993/94.

After Glenn Hoddle got The Robins promoted from the old Division One, they met Oldham twice in Premiership competition, with the Latics coming out on top on both occasions.
