Tunnel vision: Gael Clichy keeps eyes on the prize despite Manchester City’s failure to go top

Gael Clichy was left with a ‘fifty-fifty feeling’ after Manchester City missed the opportunity to go top of the Premier League table following a 1-1 draw with his old club Arsenal.

The former Gunner thought City could have done more to increase their lead after Spanish midfielder David Silva put them in front in the first half.

But Mathieu Flamini equalised for the home side after the break producing a result that the Frenchman adjudged to be a fair one for both sides.

“We can be a bit down to lose two points today because at 1-0 we felt we could have won the game but we didn’t,” he told the Manchester City website.

“So it is a fifty-fifty feeling because three points was going to give us more belief but we know that if we carry on with the kind of performances we have had in the last few weeks, it’s going to be good and we will be up there at the end of the season.

“When you come to the Emirates, you know that they are going to have a period in the games where we would have to be strong because they are going to push forward and that is what they did.”

City could have briefly gone top of the table with a victory on Saturday as Chelsea lost to Crystal Palace but Liverpool’s win against Tottenham on Sunday puts the Merseyside club in the driving seat.

The Blues sit third in the league, four points off the league leaders and two below Chelsea in second – but the Citizens have two games in hand so could yet overhaul both teams above them.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini said he was ‘satisfied’ with a point from the trip to North London despite his side having chances to win the match but Clichy was keen to emphasise the positives from the game.

“We played well and it was a good performance and we have to keep going to the end of the season,” the 28-year-old said.

“Overall, we have to be happy and look for the positive, it is a good point.

“If we keep on playing like we did we have a fair chance of doing well this year.”
