Manchester City deadline day round-up: Blues wave goodbye to Shaun Wright Phillips

Having spent close to £80m on new signings prior to transfer deadline day, mega-rich Manchester City made a late swoop for former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

The England international, who joined on a free transfer, was manager Roberto Mancini’s fifth signing of the summer, joining Stefan Savic, Gael Clichy, Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri at the Etihad Stadium.

With an abundance of options available and only 25 places in their Premier League squad, inevitably there were a number of departures as the 11pm deadline loomed.

City hero Shaun Wright Phillips, who made 217 league appearances in two spells with the club, made a late switch to Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers.

Craig Bellamy, who spent last year on loan with home-town club Cardiff City, returned to Liverpool on a free transfer, after making 27 appearances at Anfield between 2006/07.

There were also late loan moves for Roque Santa Cruz to Real Betis, Vladamir Weiss to Espanyol, John Guidetti to Feyenoord and Ryan McGivern to Bristol City.

Despite intense speculation, Wayne Bridge remained with the club after rejecting a loan deal to Scottish side Celtic and a late Stoke City bid for England winger Adam Johnson was rejected by both the club and the player himself.

Defender Nedum Onouha also missed out on a switch to Bolton, after Gary Cahill’s proposed transfer to Tottenham collapsed, or Everton, who left it too late to confirm a deal.
