Meet the Hip Hop Chip Shop: Manchester chef duo offer Salt-n-Pepa with your chips

Two Manchester chefs are launching a fish and chip shop with a difference as they look to combine food and music.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop van will be attending music festivals throughout the year serving food based around a jazz club setting, while sampling a range of music.

As well as busting out the tunes, the mobile van will be taking the traditional English supper of fish and chips and giving it an American Twist.

Boasting American-style seasonings, chili-dogs and high quality ingredients, the pair claim it is ‘Yorkshire meets The Bronx’.

“We originally came up with the idea in 2010,” said Jon Oswald, one of the creators of Hip Hop Chip Shop.

“At first we thought the name was quiet funny and eventually we came up with the concept of a mobile van that would allow us to serve food, but at the same time is based around a jazz club which will play music and will be really different.”

The mobile van means Jon and business partner Luke Stocks will be able to attend festivals across the country and experience them first hand while maintaining and running their business.

“The van gives us more flexibility with regards to moving around and getting to venues and allows us to see more things than if we were just based in one location,” Jon said.

“Standard fish and chips have just become a bit mundane and we wanted to do something that would liven it up and put a twist to it.

“We want to try different flavours and batters so we can create something really unique and something that people will crave.”

With Jon having a background in advertising and Luke in catering, they feel confident they have all bases covered to produce a unique experience which over time will continue to grow.

Jon said: “The vision is in three to five years set up a permanent base but for the time being we just look forward to what the next few months have to offer.”

The Hip Hop Chip Shop is expected to appear at B.Eat Street MCR’s Friday Food Fight on March 7. Check back on MM next week for more on this event.
