Sankeys have the perfect post-Christmas line-up to help you work off those mince pies

By Stephen Sumner

A lineup of dance goliaths has been assembled for a week of celebrations at Sankeys at the end of the year so you can dance away those Christmas puds.

From Boxing Day until New Year’s Day, the club will barely pause for breath as it’s stormed by locally-sourced and international DJs alike – there’s something for everyone this festive period, and even more acts to be confirmed.

Highlights include the yearly Hacienda reunion on 28 December, when DJs from the golden age of house will be heading to Sankeys. Manchester’s own 808 State will be rewinding us to 1987 when they pioneered Acid House, accompanied by the Joy Division bassist-turned-superstar DJ Peter Hook and Wrexham’s K-Klass.

Hacienda icon Graeme Park has lost count of the number of times he’s played at Sankeys.

He said: “I’ve yet to witness any club that compares to The Hacienda, however the Hacienda parties at Sankeys is as close as you’ll ever get to the real thing.  Especially because more than 50% of the audience actually went to The Hacienda.  And it’s in Manchester.”

Graeme thinks that Manchester’s music scene has changed a lot since those halcyon days in 80s and 90s, but it keeps him on his toes.

The landscape is more diverse and there are more clubs, but that’s meant that there are more average DJs about.

He added: “If you look you’ll find some great talent in Manchester.”

Graeme, who has a Sunday residency at Suburbia in Hale, said: “I have no idea what I’m going to play until I get to a club and it’s that variety and the different challenges I meet that keeps my passion for the music and DJing alive.”

The last night of 2011 will be familiar to Sankeys regulars with the tried and tested Heidi and her Jackathon. One of their most revered residencies, Heidi’s world-touring brand has set up home at Sankeys and set the template for all night sessions. Maceo Plex from the US and Matt Tolfrey from here in the UK will help her usher in the 2012 and help you make and break some resolutions.

As if that wasn’t enough, Metropolis are hosting a New Year’s Day party that is destined to be huge as revellers start the year as they hope to continue.

The Chase and Status guys will be well and truly warmed up as Sankeys is their fourth set in two days. They’ll be due a day off, but there’s no way they’ll disappoint. Expect their eclectic mix of drum n’ bass, dubstep and everything in between. They’ll be supported by Shy FX, the leading name in Jungle and drum n’ bass.

And listen out for Red Light’s tune Progress, which he says never fails to get the crowd moving.

He said he doesn’t mind working on New Year’s Day ‘as long as there’s a bottle of champagne waiting for me. Cough cough hint hint’.

Keep an eye on for more acts to be announced and tickets for any of the nights.
