‘Desperate cowards’ knock down eight-month pregnant teenager in Openshaw street robbery

By Dean Wilkins

Desperate cowards who robbed a heavily pregnant teenager in Openshaw are being hunted by police.

The 17-year-old victim is eight months pregnant and was attacked on Louisa Street at around 1.50pm on May 29 by two men who snatched her handbag.

The expecting mother was pushed to the ground before the men ran off with her mobile phone and a few personal items.

Sergeant Chris Flint, of the Volume Crime Team based at North Manchester, said: “To rob a young girl who was quite visibly pregnant means the men we are looking for are not only utter cowards, but are clearly desperate.

“It is purely by luck, and not design, that this young woman and her unborn baby did not suffer any serious injuries but the sheer shock of what she and her child have had to endure is something no expectant mother should have to go through. Understandably, she is very shaken up.”

The mum-to-be was not injured and the baby is also fine, but she was left very distressed as a result of her ordeal.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and released descriptions of the two offenders.

The first man is described as white, about 5ft 5in tall, of a slim build and wearing black tracksuit bottoms and a black hooded top over his face.

The other man was white, about 5ft 1in tall, of a heavy or fat build and wearing blue shorts and a black hooded top over his face.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 3913 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
