World’s largest online history project: Manchester jubilee celebrators invited to add memories to time capsule

By Kevin Benson

Jubilee celebrators are being encouraged to take part in an ambitious online project by a Stockport MP.

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Reddish and Denton chose to upload the memory of his third birthday on June 4 1977, the same day as Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Mr Gwynne is eager for people to get involved and record a piece of their own personal history for future generations to enjoy.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to get involved in not only the Diamond Jubilee but also take part in the world’s largest online history project.”

Mr Gwynne is just one of many thousands of people to upload their memories to the online capsule.

The project, called the Jubilee Time Capsule (JTC), is run by The Royal Commonwealth Society in partnership with National Express.

It is designed so people across the globe can sign up to the website and then add their favourite memories from the last 60 years of the Queen’s reign.

The website, launched in March, has so far seen memories uploaded by more than 25, 000 people.

A spokesperson from the Royal Commonwealth Society said: “The Jubilee Time Capsule is a brilliant way for people from across the UK and Commonwealth to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 years as Head of the Commonwealth.

“We’re inviting people across the globe to submit photos, videos and memories of their important moments from the last six decades.

“We have received over 68,000 items so far, many contributions recalling local histories and personal moments not recorded in the history books.

“The Jubilee Time Capsule is a People’s History of the modern Commonwealth, and a fitting and innovative digital legacy for Her Majesty in this Diamond Jubilee year.”
