Beaten and robbed in own home for £4: Elderley man ransacked for change by masked robber in Manchester

By Dean Wilkins

A callous masked robber ransacked an elderly Manchester man at his home and beat him over the head with an iron bar before stealing just £4.

The 82-year-old was lying on his sofa in his lounge when the offender forced his way in and attacked him with the weapon at around 7.30pm on New Year’s Eve.

The shocked and beaten man handed over change amounting to £4, which is all the attacker left with after searching the house on Middleton Road, North Manchester.

Detective Sergeant Chris Flint said: “This was an unwarranted attack on an elderly man. We are thoroughly investigating this robbery and the offender needs to be caught.

“I would urge anyone who may have seen a man who was in the area, matching the description, to call us.”

The victim suffered cuts to his head and an injury to his arm but didn’t require hospital treatment.

The offender is described as being 5ft 10in tall and of medium build.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 3913 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
