Driver killed after van flipped over in treacherous M60 conditions named as Christopher Lowe from Stockport

By Dean Wilkins

A motorist who was killed after his van flipped over during treacherous conditions on the M60 yesterday has been named.

Christopher Lowe, 25, who was from the Heaton Moor area of Stockport, was driving a Mercedes Sprinter van when he collided with the central barrier on the anti-clockwise M60 between junctions 19 and 20, in Blackley, at about 6.10am yesterday.

Officers attended and found the van on its side as widespread snow caused traffic chaos for thousands of motorists across Greater Manchester.

Mr Lowe was rushed to hospital where he sadly died later, no-one else was injured in the fatal crash.

Police Constable Paul Hailwood said: “Our thoughts are with Christopher’s family, who have understandably been left devastated following his death.

“We have officers supporting them as best we can at this difficult time and are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the full facts around what happened.”

Officers from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The motorway was closed for four hours as emergency services attended the accident – delays left a traffic backlog stretching for miles along Manchester Road, Oldham Road, Broadway and Rochdale Road.

If anyone witnessed the collision or has any information that may assist our investigation, please contact officers at the investigation unit directly on 0161 856 4741 or 4745.
