A courageous passer-by who intervened as two robbers fiercely attacked an Oldham man for his iPhone is wanted by police to help investigations.

A 56-year-old man was savagely beaten, punched and kicked to the head while on the ground as two offenders robbed him at around 1.10am on January 20 as he walked along Princess Street towards Nixon Street, Failsworth.

As the victim tried to defend himself, the attackers continued their assault and searched his pockets before a hero motorist disturbed the duo, casuing them to run off.

Police Constable Stephanie Hill, from the Volume Crime Team, said: “This was a violent attack where the victim was severely beaten and received very painful facial injuries that he is only just recovering from.

“The two men were disturbed by a passing motorist and ran off towards Valentine Street. I would appeal to the driver of the vehicle or anyone else who may have witnessed the robbery to get in touch.”

One man is described as being white, around 6ft 1in tall, in his early 30s, had short hair and wore a grey Adidas tracksuit.

The second is described as being white, 5ft 10in tall, in his 20s and had short dark hair.

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 9080 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
