COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2011: Mayor of Bury criticises decision for AV and council count to be same day

The Mayor of Bury has queried the timing of the voting which has taken place across Greater Manchester today.

Speaking at the Bury Council elections at Castle Leisure Centre, John Byrne questioned the decision to hold both the alternative vote referendum and local election vote on the same day.

“A kind of apathy has set in, holding two votes at the same time, AV should be a completely separate vote,” he said.

Mayor Byrne also revealed it’s widely expected labour will make some ground on Bury’s conservative majority, despite a low voter turnout.

“Whether there will be a change of administration, I don’t know,” he added.
