An 11-year-old girl scared away three men who held her parents at gun point in bed at their Heaton Chapel home last night.

The girl tried to hit one of the men with a curtain pole when she discovered him holding a gun to the back of her 43-year-old’s father’s head.

The three men, who had who had forced their way in the back door, were also threatening his wife with a brick while demanding money and jewellery.

Detective Constable Matthew Whittaker said, “Although no one was injured this incident has had a profound effect on the victims as they were terrified in their own home.”

The girl was in a neighbouring room when she overheard a commotion. After attempting to hit one of them with a curtain pole, the men fled from the back of the house.

Police were called to the property on Carnforth Road at about 11.50pm.

DC Whittaker said: “I’d urge anyone who may have seen the offenders hanging round before the attack, or running away, to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9823 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
