Armed robbers brandished a twelve-inch hammer in a raid on a Tesco store in Rochdale on Friday night – leaving staff terrified.

Three robbers – one of whom was brandishing the hammer – threatened a member of staff working at the tills of the Newhey Road shop.

The employee attempted to flee to the staff room but was pursued by a man threatening him with the hammer.

Detective Constable Donna Rollinson said: “These offenders used as much fear and intimidation as possible to threaten the staff inside the store just to get their hands on some cigarettes and cash.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, especially anyone who saw the perpetrators entering the shop.

DC Donna Rollinson: “If you were in the vicinity and witnessed any suspicious activity, or perhaps saw these men going into or out of the store, then we need to hear from you.”

The man wielding the hammer is thought to be white, of a medium build and was wearing a dark hooded top, with the hood pulled up.

He used a dark scarf to cover his face.

“Luckily, no-one was physically injured but clearly the emotional distress these men caused with the threats of violence was huge,” she said.

Anyone with any information should contact the police on 0161 856 8716 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
