Inspirational bike ride to honour lives of Manchester police officers ‘tragically killed in line of duty’

North West bobbies will saddle up for a charity bike ride in memory of PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone who were murdered last October.

The North West Police Benevolent Fund (NWPBF) is arranging the Our Heroes Have Collar Numbers mountain bike ride to raise money for the families of those injured or killed in the line of duty.

The four-day bike ride, between May 7 and May 10, will cover 181 miles along the coast of North Wales, and each rider will proudly wear the PC numbers 12601 and 14846, in remembrance of the officers.

Bike ride organiser PC Russell Heaton explained how the bike ride came about and how training is preparing the team for the punishing ride ahead.

“The charity has greatly supported the colleagues, friends and families of PC Fiona Bone and PC  Nicola Hughes who were tragically killed in the line of duty so we want to pay them back as much as we can,” he said.

“We have had no end of interest from other riders wanting to join the ride. Unfortunately our maximum is nine riders due to the logistics and keeping tabs on the team over the mountains.

“We wish to thank all people who have helped us along the way and for all those whom have donated.”

Each officer will carry with them equipment and food supplies as well as dedication, hard work and inspiration to cope with the ten hours of cycling that they will put in every day.

“Fitness is the biggest obstacle to overcome,” PC Heaton said.

“The team needs to be working upper body as well as riding – we all aim to lose a stone to make the ride easier.”

The NWPBF is urging the public to support the cyclists on their trek and have been flooded with donations since the bike ride was announced.

The fund aims to support and provide a source of income for families of police officers who have been injured or killed while on duty.

Donations help to keep the charity campaigning for police officers and their families, and the money goes toward services such as physiotherapy, lodging and grants to make life easier for those affected.
