Salford charity KidsCan are aiming to break the world record for the largest Can Can dance.
The event will take place at Manchester’s EventCity on July 1 and will see support from local bands The Majestix and Phoenix Rock.
Salford City Reds have also confirmed their support with players agreeing to adjudicate the record attempt. The clubs cheerleaders will also lend their support.
KidsCan Fundraising Manager Holly Bond said: “We hope that the event will not only raise vital funds for our research but it will also raise awareness about KidsCan.
“It is our 10th anniversary and we hope to mark the occasion to celebrate our birthday with breaking the record and kicking childhood cancer.”
The world record currently stands at 1,503 people, set by Irn Bru in 2008. KidsCan are hoping to smash this by involving 5,000 people.
David Hughes from local band Phoenix Rock said he was really looking forward to supporting KidsCan in their world record attempt.
He added: “I can’t wait to see to see so many people up on their feet dancing.”
The concept came about after a director at a local advertising company met some of KidsCan’s fundraisers at a networking event in 2010.
Edwin Jones, Managing Director of Hive, based at Salford’s Media City, said: “It was a bit of a no-brainer really considering the charity’s name.
Then when we discovered that the current record stands at just 1,503 people, we became certain that Salford would be able to beat that – especially since it’s for such a good cause.”
As well as coming up with the idea, Hive have also lent their expertise by designing the microsite and marketing material – all free of charge.
Mr Jones went added: “KidsCan is the only cancer charity dedicated to developing treatment for children, and we hope that a record breaking ‘KidsCan Can Can’ will prove to be a great way of raising awareness and promotion.
Andy Orr, Managing Director at Event City said: “We are delighted to be the chosen host venue for such a worthy fundraising event, and particularly privileged that EventCity may get a mention in the Guinness World Book of Records as the location for the largest Can Can dance.”
The event starts at 12 noon on Sunday July 1. EventCity is located by The Trafford Centre, Manchester.
Tickets are priced at £10 per person. More information on the event can be found at www.cancer4kidscan.org.uk
