Smashing car windscreens using the handle of a monstrous blade then dancing a victory jig – this is the bizarre moment a knife-wielding maniac went on the rampage in a Failsworth petrol station.
The startling CCTV footage shows the hooded man walk into the Texaco garage on Oldham Road just before 9pm on Friday February 22.
He then starts trying to pummel his way into a parked car by using the handle of his knife as a hammer.
When that fails he decides to kick his way in but soon gives up and wanders across the forecourt with his knife in full sight.
At this point he tries to smash his way into a manned taxi to the obvious shock and terror of the driver before breaking into a stationary vehicle which he fails to start.
Detective Constable Kate Carnally from Oldham CID said: “Thankfully no-one was injured during this incident at the petrol station, but staff and customers were understandably left terrified after a man brandishing a knife threatened a number of people there and damaged several cars.
“The man’s intentions as he carried out these threats are still unclear at this time, but we continue to make extensive efforts to identify and trace the man responsible.”
Strangely, the man, his jacket emblazoned with a Union Jack motif, didn’t steal anything during the incident.
He walked away from the petrol station and made his way towards the canal.
Despite an extensive search of the area following the incident, he could not be found.
As well as the CCTV footage released, police have also issued an efit of the dangerous man in the hope of tracking him down.
DC Carnally added: “If you recognise this man in the hooded top or if you have information as to his whereabouts now, please get in touch with police.”
EFIT: Issued by police to trace suspect
He is described as 6ft tall and of average build. He was wearing denim jeans and boots with a white trim and a brown or black bubble jacket over a hoody top, which had the hood pulled up. The jacket’s large Union Jack motif was on the front.
