‘Terrified’ staff at Timperley Sainsbury’s threatened by axe-wielding robbers for cash and cigarettes

By Chris Higgins

Masked robbers brandishing a hatchet and a tyre iron stole cash and cigarettes in a terrifying supermarket raid in Timperley on Tuesday night.

The two men wore balaclavas and entered the Sainsbury’s Local on Stockport Road at around 9.20pm waving their weapons at staff before one jumped behind the tobacco counter.

The pair stole cash from the till and a number of cigarette boxes before making their getaway in a black Fiat Punto, while shoppers consoled the petrified cashier.

A store worker, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It was a terrifying situation to be in. I’m glad some of our customers stuck around to make sure the cashier was alright.

“Those there on the day handled themselves very well and all of us here are just glad they are unharmed.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
