The body of a newborn baby found yesterday afternoon in Lostock, near Bolton Wanderers’ Reebok Stadium, has sparked an appeal from police searching for the mother.
Police were called to Ox Hey Lane shortly before 5pm yesterday following reports the body of a baby had been found.
Bolton-based superintendent Steve Nibloe has urged anyone with potential information to get in touch, regardless of how insignificant this might be.
“We are obviously deeply concerned for the welfare of the mother,” he said. “If anyone has seen someone in the area or has any information about who you think the mother might be please call us.
“This is clearly a very upsetting incident and we already have a number of officers dealing with this at the scene and making other enquiries.
“We do not know with any certainty how long the baby has been there or how it has died.
“While I understand there will be concern in the community I want to reassure residents that we will be working hard to answer these questions.”
A post mortem is expected to take place on Monday, but officers who attended and discovered the body believe it to be a newborn baby.
Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
