Rugby World Cup ticket handouts for ‘deserving’ residents in bid to boost Rochdale economy

By Ben Ireland

Rugby League World Cup tickets are to be handed to deserving Rochdale residents as local businesses look to sponsor upcoming events.

Charities, families, schools and community organisations are to be handed a ticket for the Fiji and Ireland tie providing a ‘Day to Remember’.

By sponsoring £500, local businesses can advertise their brand and provide tickets for deserving people in the area.

Mark Widdup, Director of Operational Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to be involved in the country’s biggest sporting event of 2013 and to put something back into the community.

“Each business’s support will be converted into tickets for some really deserving local people who we will ensure get a day to remember!”

Businesses are also being encouraged to sponsor the Feel Good Festival this August, as the Council move to capitalise on the summer’s festivities.

The annual event, which saw 10,000 attend last year, was described by Debbie O’Brien, of Rochdale Town Centre Management, as ‘easily the most popular event we do’.

High-profile bands will be playing, with celebrity chefs providing cooking demonstrations at the event, which will include a food market, open air dining and family entertainment.

Local entrepreneurs and businesses will be given the chance to host their own event as a part of the festival.

Last year’s event saw 25 bands perform in front of Rochdale Twon Hall, including Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The Lightning Seeds and Badly Drawn Boy.

Ms O’Brien added: “I’m encouraging anyone with an idea to come forward now. This is your festival.

“It’s also an excellent sponsorship opportunity for businesses in the region, and we are talking to potential sponsors to help us make it another big success.”

Councillor Peter Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Customer Services, said: “Each year the festival grows in popularity, bringing more people of all ages into town and creating a real buzz.

“It is a fantastic showcase for the borough and something the council is pleased to support.”

Fiji versus Ireland will be played at Spotland Stadium on October 28, with tickets £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and can be purchased online at www.rlwc2013.com or by phoning 0844 847 2013.
