A teenage motorist arrested on suspicion of killing a brother and sister during a horror crash in Manchester has been bailed for the third time.
Kulwant Singh, 32, of Salford, and his sister Ravel Kaur, 37, of Cheetham Hill, died when their Nissan Micra was ploughed into by a Mercedes driven by Manchester City academy player and England U-17 regular Courtney Meppen-Walter.
Officers attended the fatal smash on Bury New Road at around 10.15pm on September 1 – in the back of the Micra were Ms Kaur’s two sons, who are 16 and 17 years old, and both are now making a good recovery.
Police arrested the 18-year-old driver of the Mercedes on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he has now been rebailed until January 24 2013 – a 19-year-old man who was driving a VW Golf was also arrested but was released without charge.
Investigating officers are now satisfied the two vehicles were not racing at the time of the collision.
Police Sergeant Danny Byrne, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is an incredibly complex and sensitive investigation and it is important we balance the needs of the families, who have suffered unimaginable grief, with the facts as we have them.
“Having reviewed all the available information and evidence, I am satisfied that the vehicles were not racing each other and the driver of the VW Golf, who has been released without any further action, is not involved in this incident.”
“A file of evidence has now been completed and passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision on the driver of the Mercedes, who has been bailed until January 24 2013 while the CPS assess the case.”
The horrendous incident shocked the community and left two boys without their mother and uncle.
Police insisted they are determined to earn justice for the families of Ms Kaur and Mr Singh and are continuing their inquiries.
“I know there is a lot of speculation and media interest in this incident, so when any decision is made we will let everyone know, but I stress that our primary focus is to ensure this incident is investigated thoroughly and to protect the families of Kulwant and Ravel,” Police Sergeant Danny Byrne added.
Meppen-Walter has already been bailed in September and November.
