Beautiful hills, title-winning football and travel… three reasons Manchester attracts second-most multimillionaires

By Dominic Claeys-Jackson

Greater Manchester is home to the highest amount of multimillionaires outside of London, according to research by a leading analyst.

WealthInSight found that 374 multimillionaires – individuals who have net assets of over £18.4million – lived in the county, with Surrey second with 230 and Hertfordshire third with 206.

Manchester itself hosts 170 multimillionaires, putting the city in first place ahead of Glasgow (158), Edinburgh (134) and Birmingham (130).

Phillip Diggle, branch manager of Hale’s Gascoigne Halman Estate Agency, believes that there are several factors which have resulted in the area’s attraction to the rich.

He told MM: “Greater Manchester has excellent provisions for travel, with an international airport and great motorway links.

“You can get from the very outskirts to the city centre within twenty minutes, and are also within touching distance of the National Trust’s beautiful Tatton Park.”

Manchester has a rate of 33.79 multi-millionaires per 100,000 people, which puts the city sixth-place behind Carlisle, Cheltenham, Belfast, London and surprise table-toppers Aberdeen.

And Mr Diggle revealed that its Manchester’s close proximity to a breathing metropolis and beautiful countryside that attract the country’s richest.

“You can get from the very outskirts to the city centre within twenty minutes,” he said. “And you are also within touching distance of the National Trust’s beautiful Tatton Park.

“The area also offers a range of different houses and styles, from Victorian properties through to those with a more modern, cutting edge design.

“There really is something for everyone.”

Diggle also felt that Manchester City and Manchester United’s status as two of the world’s premier football teams also boosted figures.

He said: “The city’s two main football teams will attract not only the super-rich footballer, but also the wealthier supporter.

“Their successes have certainly played a role.”

London – excluded from the list – is ahead by some distance, with over 4200 of UK’s 10,100 multimillionaires choosing to reside in the capital.
