Stockport mum-of-two cleared of murder after boyfriend burnt alive in ‘agonising death’

A Stockport mum of two was cleared of murder today, after being accused of dousing her boyfriend in spirits and setting him on fire.

Helen Green, 43, was accused of pouring spirits on her partner of 10 years, Robert McAlees, following a drunken row at their home on Carlingford Close.

However she was cleared of murder at Manchester Crown Court this morning.

The court had heard how Robert McAlees died an ‘agonising death’ following 90 percent burns to his body.

Some members of the jury had wept when played his chilling 999 calls, in which he can be heard screaming ‘I’m burning’.

Neighbours saw him screaming and engulfed in flames outside the home.

In another emergency call, a neighbour could be heard saying ‘he’s screaming, he’s smouldering’.

Ms Green denied arguing with Mr McAlees or setting him on fire, and told the court the first she had known about the fire was upon hearing a squealing noise.

The jury found her not guilty this morning.
