A Wigan man found unconscious lying on a pavement on Sunday died from serious head injuries yesterday.

Francis Farrell, 56, was found at around 4.15am on June 17, on Frog Lane, Wigan, and was taken to hospital with severe injuries.

Mr Farrell died last night and police are appealing to the public to help their investigations by releasing CCTV footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, from Wigan CID, said: “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sympathies to the victim’s family and friends at what is clearly a devastating time for them.

“I have a team of detectives investigating this incident who are working to establish exactly what has happened and provide some much needed answers for his family.

Francis was wearing a light blue checked shirt with light blue jeans, black shoes, a black fleece and black hat. He is white and around 6ft tall, of medium build with short grey hair.

A 35-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault has been bailed until July 19 pending further inquires.

Detective Chief Inspector Millington added: “Because of the injuries Francis has sustained we are treating this as suspicious. We are appealing to anyone who saw him in the early hours of the morning on Sunday June 17 to get in contact.

“Did you perhaps see Francis leaving Wiend bar, were you on or around Frog Lane, did you speak to him at any point or did you witness how he came to suffer his injuries?”
