A body found in a Manchester canal has been confirmed as missing New Year’s Eve reveller Souvik Pal, but toxicology results to establish the cause of death were inconclusive.

The 18-year-old Manchester Metropolitan University student was last seen at Warehouse Project, Trafford, at around 11pm – three weeks after his disappearance specialist teams recovered his body from Bridgewater Canal yesterday.

The Indian-born teenager was found a short distance away from Old Trafford stadium, where he worked part-time on match days.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with Souvik’s family at this devastating time and our officers are doing all they can to support them.

“We do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Souvik’s death and a file will be submitted to the coroner in due course.”

Souvik’s father had flown over from India to help officers with their investigations to help find his son safely.

Tributes from his friends and fellow students have been pouring in since his body was found yesterday.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4223 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
