Bolton family pay tribute to ‘loving’ toddler who died after cardiac arrest – man remains in custody on suspicion of murder

The family of a two-year-old Bolton toddler who died following a cardiac arrest are paying tribute to him.

Rio Smedley, of Cheriton Drive, was discovered at 5.45pm on Sunday and later died at Royal Bolton Hospital.

Police are continuing to question a 22-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Rio’s family said: “Rio was the loving son of Kirsty, brother of Ella, Grandson of Karen and Paddy, Gordon and Yvonne, nephew of Shaun and Jason.

“He will be greatly missed and the family now ask for some peace during this hard time.”

A Home Office post-mortem examination is taking place at the Manchester Children’s Hospital to ascertain the cause of his death.
