Man charged after Manchester police officers run over in Harpurhey leaving one with fractured skull

A man has been charged after two Manchester police officers were seriously injured when they were run over following a routine stop.

Wayne Crompton, 37, of Kenmore Way, Whitefield was charged with two counts of section 18 assault, dangerous driving, aggravated taking without consent, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

One officer suffered a fractured skull and bleed to the brain and the other has a broken arm after they pulled over what is believed to be a red Hyundai.

When they approached the vehicle it reversed towards one of them before it drove forward and collided with the other.

Both men remain in hospital after the incident on Rochdale Road, Harpurhey at about 10.50pm.

A 49-year-old man arrested was released without charge.

Crompton will appear before Manchester Magistrates Court tomorrow.
