Weird World: Sex toy throat massage pioneered by Canadian vocal coach stimulates singing voice

By Chris Bailey

Want to improve your singing? Simply massaging your throat with a sex toy will do just the trick, according to a Canadian vocal coach.

University of Alberta drama professor David Ley – who pioneered the raunchy technique – insists rubbing a vibrator or similarly-stimulating device over your throat will have you singing from the rooftops.

Ley admits it is bound to raise a few laughs, but remains adamant that putting it into practice will have you hitting those climactic notes in no time.

“I know it’s a bit different, I know there’s a giggle factor – but it works,” Ley told metronews.ca.

“It relaxes tension in the larynx – it improves range and projection.”

And when Toronto thespian Sara Farb booked an appointment with the unorthodox coach, she was instantly gratified.

“It was almost immediate,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it!”

Ley stumbled across the idea after a long and fruitless search investigating the effects of vibration on human voices.

After trying out many different ‘massage machines’, his hunt ended when he discovered a vibrator in his local sex shop was the perfect size for creating sweet music.

“I was in the middle of the store testing it on the throat of a friend,” Ley laughed.

“The girl behind the counter was intrigued but she listened to every word I had to say about voice and coaching – I’m sure she’s heard it all.”

However Ley urges those with serious voice or throat issues to visit a doctor first – his business is strictly helping people find their musical peak.

“What I’m trying to do is to help the person hit that high note or harness their emotional energy,” he added.
