‘My thoughts are with the people trapped’: Shaw councillor speaks of ‘horror’ at Oldham explosion

Exclusive by Dean Wilkins

A Shaw councillor has spoken of his ‘shock’ and ‘horror’ at the huge explosion in Oldham that has already claimed the life of a young child.

Four homes were badly damaged in the blast on Buckley Street shortly before 11.15am today.

Cllr Rod Blyth is currently on holiday in France, however he told MM that his thoughts were with all those involved.

He said: “As far as I know, it’s a gas explosion. It’s absolutely shocking and horrible for the family and my thoughts are with them at the moment.”

Police, fire and ambulance services are at the scene searching for one missing man and one man was flown by air ambulance to Wythenshawe hospital with 80% burns.

Cllr Blyth said: “I’ve been told there are possibly more fatalities and people are trapped, though there are mixed messages.

“Buckley Street is in the middle of my ward and it’s at the heart of Shaw.

“My thoughts are with the people who are trapped and their families. The police and fire service are brilliant and are doing everything they can, as they have shown in all situations.”
