Masked armed robbers with ‘propensity for violence’ raid Oldham off-licence and make off with cash, laptops and booze

By Matthew Lees

Masked men who burst into an Oldham off-licence on Tuesday threatened staff with a hammer and stole cash, laptops and booze are being hunted by police.

The Top Shop in Fraser Street, Shaw was raided at 9:05pm when three armed men threatened the attendant behind the counter and grabbed him around the throat.

They snatched a hammer from behind the counter and threatened to hit staff before escaping in a car with the cash, two laptops, cigarettes and bottles of whiskey and vodka.

“Thankfully no-one was hurt,” said Detective Sergeant John Coleman of Oldham Integrated Neighbourhood Policing Team 2.

“But if you put yourselves in the position of the shop assistants you can imagine how they must have felt.

“It is clear therefore that the offenders are dangerous criminals with a propensity for violence and need to be caught.”

The robbers, who wore masks or face-coverings, drove off in a black Volkswagen Golf which was later found abandoned.

Police are looking to speak to any potential witnesses.

Detective Sergeant Coleman added: “I would appeal to anyone who has information about this robbery to come forward.”

Anyone with any information is urged to call the INPT on 0161 856 8951 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
