Families evacuated as blaze ravages Stockport town centre – more than 50 firefighters on scene

By Dean Wilkins

Stockport families were evacuated from their homes after a large town centre fire ravaged a block of flats under construction last night.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze on Lower Hillgate from around 2.20am and emergency crews successfully controlled it seven hours later.

Fresh crews were brought in around 7am after 10 engines were deployed to attend to the incident.

Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution and police are redirecting traffic between Market Place and the junction of Waterloo Road and Edward Street.

One Stockport resident Tweeted: “I live right near fire in Stockport last night, [officers] did a grand job, god bless, they stayed organised and calm.”

Fire officers are now able to investigate the cause of the incident having controlled the fire and anyone with information is asked to call 0800 555 815.
