Village favourite Taurus is hanging out the streamers this month to celebrate its landmark 10th birthday.
Affectionately known as ‘the community centre’ because of its open-door approach to all genders, ages and sexual orientations, the Canal Street bar and restaurant was founded in June 2001 by Mike Pollard (aka ‘Polly’), Tom Sharkey and Iain Scott.
The business quickly established itself with a simple, no-nonsense approach to food and drink, and together with chef Peter Smith, they continue to provide the same high levels of drinking and dining.
Casting an eye over their menu, Mancunian Matters salivates at the thought of mussels served with French fries and dipping bread in a Mariniere and cream sauce or a Thai green broth [I can recommend the mussels – ed].
Speaking to MM, Iain said: “I’m here seven days a week, but even if I didn’t work here I would be. It has such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and it’s always full of laughter.
“We pride ourselves on quality – in terms of food, drinks and service. It really has been the best ten years and we’ve seen the bar go from strength to strength.
“It’s something I’m proud to have my name to as I do believe that it offers more than anything else in the area. We have excellent food, a whole cocktail list, a great venue with a friendly atmosphere, and host countless events including plays, exhibitions, and theatre rehearsals.”
The bar and restaurant has scooped a handful of awards in its decade of existence, including the much-coveted City Life ‘Bar of the Year’.
These days, the venue is operated by management team Nosheel Rahi and Ric Battarbee and their loyal team, who in some cases have been with the business for up to ten years.
The owners also have a keen eye for all things green, and the bar has praised for its recycling and environmental efforts – going so far as to recycle the waste oil from their kitchens!
Taurus has also become home to dozens of LGBT social and support groups, sporting teams, and artistic and literary associations, as well as being a recognised haven for artists and fringe performers.
And what of the future? The Taurus team remain dedicated to the cause – to provide a safe LGBT space, accessible to everyone, with laughter coming from both sides of the bar.
